Brumbies rugby lock Shawn McKay has died in a South African hospital after suffering a heart attack.
Mackay had shown some positive signs after being brought out of a medically induced coma after being struck by a vehicle in Durban a week ago and he underwent spinal surgery.
But he developed an infection in his bloodstream and his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Brumbies players were told of the death when they arrived back in Australia.
