Hesson says they can cope without Vettori

The New Zealand cricket coach Mike Hesson insists his side can cope without veteran bowler Daniel Vettori as they bid to win the Champions Trophy tournament in Britain.

Vettori missed the one-day series win over England as he attempted to return from a lengthy injury break.

Hesson admits it would now be a "calculated risk" were Vettori to be selected for New Zealand's first match of the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on Sunday night.

Hesson says it's looking promising but they'll wait until after he trains.

Hesson says he's not vital, they've won two away series without Vettori but they're certainly a better side with him in it.

In Vettori's absence, off-spinner Nathan McCullum has proved a more than able deputy as New Zealand's specialist one-day slow bowler, playing an important role in this year's series wins in South Africa and England.
