Mexico go top of CONCACAF

5:13 pm on 5 June 2013

Mexico have won their first football World Cup qualifier in 2013, with a 1-0 away win over Jamaica in Kingston.

The win sees the Mexicans climb up to top spot in their CONCACAF, or North, Central American and Caribbean, confederation.

That moves the USA into fourth place - the country which finishes fourth plays off with the All Whites in November, for a place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil.

Jamaica, who host the United States on Saturday, are bottom with two points from four games.

But there's still a long way to go in CONCACAF with today's game just the fourth of 10 played by each of the nations remaining.

Japan became the first nation to qualify on Tuesday night with a 1-1 home draw with Australia.

The Socceroos can still qualify from that Asian confederation group, with home games to come against Jordan and Iraq.
