Melbourne Rebels don't know if Beale will be back

The Melbourne Rebels coach Damien Hill doesn't know if troubled Wallaby Kurtley Beale will play for the side again, but has endorsed his decision to check into an alcohol treatment facility.

The 24-year-old is understood to have entered the same Sydney facility used earlier this year by Canterbury National Rugby League player Ben Barba.

Beale took the initiative and was already in the clinic before a meeting yesterday at the Australian Rugby Union headquarters between the parties, including the Rebels, decided he would be suspended indefinitely.

The decision effectively ended the debate about whether the mercurial playmaker should be considered to face the touring British and Irish Lions next month.

The meeting was triggered by Beale's breach of a written no-alcohol undertaking he had given to the ARU and the Rebels for his return from a suspension after a drunken altercation with teammates in late March.

He admitted drinking the night after his comeback in the Rebels' match against the Chiefs ealier this week and also missed a weekly appointment with a psychologist.

It's believed he will return to Sydney to play for the NSW Waratahs next season.
