The Hurricanes are planning to be without captain and All Blacks centre Conrad Smith for at least a couple of weeks after he was knocked unconscious in the side's 48-14 Super rugby loss to the Bulls in Pretoria on Sunday.

The coach Mark Hammett has indicated medical staff hope to have a clearer prognosis later today.

Smith who was taken to hospital for a scan, after being forced from the field in the first half when he was knocked out making a tackle.

Hammett says despite the embarrassing result he's confident they can turn things around against the Cheetahs next round.
