Supplements report reveals institutional failings at Essendon

The chairman of the Australian football team the Essendon's Bombers has apologised for institutional failings at the club following the release of an independent report into the use of banned substances.

The review was launched in February shortly after the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority revealed it was investigating the club.

The chairman David Evans has not conceded that illegal substances were used at the club as he says the substances given to players is a matter for ASADA to investigate.

But he says the report has found a sharp increase of injections and a diversification in supplement use.

Evans says with the marginalisation of traditional medical staff an environment of experimental pharmacology emerged that was never adequately controlled at the club.

He says the full report will not be made public.
