Sir Alex distraught, Mourinho sympathetic

The Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was too distraught to face the media after his side's Champions League exit against Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

Ferguson was visibly enraged after the referee sent Nani off for a high challenge early in the second half, when United were up 1-0.

Real took advantage of the dismissal with quick goals from Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo to earn a 2-1 win and 3-2 aggregate victory to reach the last eight.

The United assistant manager Mike Phelan replaced Ferguson at the post-match media conference.

Phelan says the dressing room and the manager were distraught.

The Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is sympathetic to Manchester United's anger over the red card for Nani that was the turning point in the Champions League match.

He also concedes his side didn't deserve to win.

Mourinho felt it was right for Ferguson to criticise the decision.

Mourinho says he's spoken to Ferguson, who had no complaints about Real's role in the incident.
