Spain face playoff to regain World Group status

Spanish tennis is facing the embarrassment of being relegated into a playoff situation to regain its status in the Davis Cup elite world group after a shock loss yesterday to Canada in the opening round.

Canada took advantage of a severely understrength Spanish side to eliminate the top seeds in Vancouver yesterday - the home team's world number 13 Milos Raonic sealing the tie against Spain's world number 82 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the deciding rubber.

The Spaniards were without three of their top players for the tie, Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro.

It's the first time Canada have made the quarter-finals.
