Nelsen could be replaced by old team-mate at QPR

The former All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen could be replaced at Queen's Park Rangers by his former central defensive partner at Blackburn Rovers, Christopher Samba.

The Guardian newspaper is reporting that QPR are close to landing Samba from the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, and the centre-half has flown to England to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at the Premier League's bottom club.

QPR have apparently triggered a clause in the Congolese defender's contract by bidding around £10 million for the 28-year-old.

Nelsen finished his seven years in England yesterday morning to take up his new job coaching Toronto FC - he was applauded off the pitch with a guard of honour in North-West London as QPR drew with champions Manchester City to remain unbeaten in 2013.
