Novak Djokovic has made a successful start at the French Tennis Open and Roger Federer has opened his 50th straight major championship with a record-equalling 233rd grand slam win.

Djokovic, who has yet to make a final in Paris, is bidding to become only the third man to hold all four majors at the same time, and he eased past the Italian claycourt specialist Potito Starace 7-6 6-3 6-1.

Federer had few problems getting past Germany's world number 78 Tobias Kamke, winning 6-2 7-5 6-3.

The Swiss champion rates Rafael Nadal the favourite to win his 7th French Open.
