NZ crew rapt with rowing world record

The New Zealand women's lightweight double sculling crew of Julia Edward and Louise Ayling set a new world record at the opening day of the rowing world cup in Lucerne, Switzerland.

In a time of 6.49.43 Edward and Ayling broke the old record by three tenths of second in their first ever international race to qualify for the finals.

Edward says they knew they had a good row but it wasn't until after the race that the Olympic-bound pair realised they set a new record.

All of New Zealand's 12 boats finished in the top three of their heats to progress to later rounds.
