The former Canterbury rugby captain Don Hayes says he'll always remember Jock Hobbs for his determination both on and off the field.

The former All Black captain and long-time Rugby Union chairman died Tuesday aged 52.

Jock Hobbs who was credited with winning the right to host last year's Rugby World Cup for New Zealand had been suffering from cancer for some time.

Don Hayes captained Hobbs during a famous era for Canterbury rugby when they held the Ranfurly Shield for three years.

Hayes says Hobbs' determination during the battle to save the game in New Zealand when professionalism hit in 1995, was remarkable.
