A Marlborough wine has been recognised as the best New Zealand riesling at an international competition in Australia, but a Tasmanian wine took the overall prize.

Hunter's Marlborough 2009 Riesling was judged the top New Zealand entry by seven judges at the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

About 450 wines from 10 countries were tasted over two days to find the winners for several categories.

A German entry won the best sweet riesling and best European riesling awards. A Tasmanian wine took the overall prize.

It was the 12th year the event has been held.
