New animal transport welfare code

8:28 pm on 18 September 2011

The Minister of Agriculture has issued a new welfare code for transporting animals.

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee developed the code to reduce distress caused to animals while they are being carried in any form of transport around the country.

It sets out minimum standards covering stock management, journey planning, loading and food, water and rest.

Both the owners of the animals and the carriers are responsible under the code.

If they fail to meet the minimum standards, they can be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act.
