Farmers have had time to prepare for polar blast

5:09 pm on 14 August 2011

Federated Farmers says people have had plenty of time to prepare for the polar blast forecast to hit the lower South Island in full force later on Sunday.

MetService says an extremely cold southerly outbreak will bring a significant amount of snow to Fiordland, Southland and Otago.

All of the state highways remain open at this stage, but bus services have been cancelled in Dunedin's hill suburbs.

Federated Farmers Adverse Events spokesperson, David Rose, is based in Southland.

He says very few farmers are lambing yet in his area, and farmers are well prepared for this weather event.

Mr Rose says stock have been in good condition and plenty of feed has been carried over into winter so farmers are in a better position to handle adverse weather.
