Motorcyclists recruited to report effluent spills

A new project that asks motorcyclists to report stock effluent on roads aims to reduce the danger the spillages pose.

Operation Green Line is being spearheaded by the recently established Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council with support from the National Stock Effluent Working Group.

It aims to stop effluent spills from livestock transportation by getting motorbike riders to report them, by texting DUNG to 244.

The advisory council says it wants to ensure farmers and livestock haulers know where effluent is a problem and to highlight the need to follow the right practices.

National Stock Effluent Working Group convenor Fiona Knight says spillages pose a danger to motorcyclists who skid in the effluent.

Ms Knight says the spills have been under-reported and she hopes more information will come in, so extra disposal sites can be installed or other action taken.
