UK superbug should set off alarms in NZ - Greens

2:26 pm on 5 June 2011

The Green Party says the discovery of a new antibiotic-resistant superbug strain in British cows should be setting off alarm bells about the use of antibiotics on New Zealand farms.

Researchers say it is the first time any strain of MRSA has been found in farm animals in Britain and it is believed to be spreading to humans.

Environmental campaigners are attributing it to the overuse of antibiotics by dairy farmers.

The Greens say the same conditions for creating a similar superbug exist in New Zealand.
