Further pick-up in wool prices

12:39 pm on 27 May 2011

There was a further pick-up in wool prices this week - despite an unfavourable currency shift, triggered by a stronger New Zealand dollar, which increases the price that overseas buyers have to pay.

New Zealand Wool Services International says more than 80% of the 16500 bales of North and South Island wool auctioned on Thursday were sold.

Prices for most types were higher than in the previous sale a fortnight ago, with finer wools making the biggest gains.

Mid-micron fleece lifted by 10.5% in line with price trends in Australia and fine crossbred fleece and shears were between 2% - 7% stronger.

Coarse crossbred fleece was 1.5% - 6.5% dearer and first lambs' wools rose by 1% - 4%.

But there was a big difference in prices for oddments. Prices for short oddments were 13% - 20% higher in the South Island, but eased by 1% or 2% in the North.

Next week's scheduled sale is cancelled because not enough wool is available.
