Kiwifruit Vine Health changes PSA strategy

6:02 am on 14 February 2011

Kiwifruit Vine Health has agreed the strategy to control the bacterial disease PSA should be changed.

The vine killing disease was first discovered just over three months on orchards near Te Puke and has now been confirmed on 147 orchards.

All kiwifruit growing areas except Northland have been affected.

Forty-one orchards near Te Puke growing Gold kiwifruit are infected with the Italian strain of PSA, which is more virulent.

Kiwifruit Vine Health has decided the emphasis of the PSA management strategy should focus on removing vines from Gold orchards which have the Italian strain, and any orchard with secondary symptoms of the disease.
