Manawatu to continue with drought relief request

A North Island farming leader says that farmers still need help managing feed because the dry conditions are far from over.

The Manawatu-Rangitikei region filed a drought declaration request last Friday after several months of little rainfall.

It received a significant amount of rain over the weekend, along with other North Island regions officially in drought.

But Manawatu Federated Farmers president Gordon McKellar says it will not be withdrawing its application to the Government for drought relief.

He says while the rain has eased the extremely dry conditions, it is still a difficult time for many farmers.

The Taranaki region is keeping its drought relief application on hold while it waits to see if the weekend's rain is followed up with more over the next few weeks.
