Fonterra reviews river discharge plan

4:28 pm on 1 November 2010

Fonterra is reviewing an application to discharge wastewater from milk powder processing into the Mangatainoka River and is investigating alternatives.

The co-operative has been criticised for seeking a 22-year extension to discharge milk powder condensates from a dairy factory at Pahiatua into the river, which flows into the polluted Manawatu River.

Fonterra is a signatory of a recently signed accord to clean up the Manawatu River.

The company had a resource consent to discharge into a tributary of the Mangatainoka which expired in March last year.

It says it lodged its original applications to discharge directly into the river more than two years ago.

But after public consultation it says it is looking at alternatives, including irrigating the wastewater on to land or diverting it through the local town waste treatment plant.

Fonterra says it will report back to Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council in February.
