Wine growers looking for better deal from Lion Nathan

Wine growers in Gisborne are hoping for better from Lion Nathan, which is moving into the region.

The company, which is owned by Kirin Holdings of Japan, has bought a dozen wine brands and winery interests in Gisborne from Pernod-Ricard for $88 million.

Wine Growers Society president John Clarke says some growers felt abandoned by Pernod-Ricard after the French wine and liquor company cancelled their contracts 18 months ago.

Lion Nathan wants to expand its wine business. Managing director Peter says Lion Nathan plans to build on the brands to increase sales.

Approval of the deal is required from the Overseas Investment Office.
