Invasive weed plan for Desert Road

3:32 pm on 12 October 2014

Eight organisations have joined forces to protect the Desert Road landscape from the adverse effects of three invasive legume plants: broom, gorse and lupin.

The Waikato Regional Council said most of the landscape was legume-free, but there were some large infestations around road verges and remote areas.

Groups including the council, the Department of Conservation and the Defence Force have signed up to the project.

The council's biosecurity operations manager Peter Russell said the groups had agreed to work together to eradicate or significantly reduce the weed invasion.

Biocontrol agents for gorse and broom have already been released in the area.
