Generators taken from farm to farm for milking

Sharemilkers in Westland have taken generators from farm to farm to get cows milked during the storm.

With road access cut and power out, Westland Milk Products suppliers banded together to ensure cows were milked.

Operations general manager Bernard May said a tremendous community spirit got many farmers through the worst of the storm and helped to greatly reduce the impact on some farms.

In spite of the conditions, Mr May said most milk was collected but a few farmers were forced to dump milk on their farms.

There were some reports of damage to milking sheds, but Mr May said these still have to be collated and assessed.
