This year's young farmer contest has its first regional winner.

Christchurch agronomist Reuben Carter, 30, won the Tasman final at the weekend and will join six other regional winners to contest the grand final in July.

He's no stranger to the young farmer contest, having competed in seven regional finals and represented Tasman at last year's grand final.

Second placed Andrew Wiffen, who farms at Ward, is also an experienced regional contestant, as is third placed Sarah O'Connell a Beef + Lamb New Zealand extension officer from Dunsandel. She was just two points in front of James Hoban of Hurunui, competing in his first regional event.
