Pro-organic group says veges and fruit full of pesticides

A report by a pro-organic group says many conventionally grown vegetables and fruit are full of pesticides.

But it has been dismissed as irresponsible and unscientifc by the Agcarm organisation, which represents agricultural chemical companies.

Agcarm says the figures have been spun to suit the Safe Food Campaign, which has issued a new dirty dozen list of foods with dangerous levels of pesticide residues.

The list's biggest concern is with imported grapes, saying 35 different pesticides were detected in samples taken, with 98 percent having pesticide residues.

Green MP Steffan Browning, who supports the Safe Food campaign, said the results are reality, not spin.

But Agcarm chief executive Graeme Peters said all chemicals used in agriculture are thoroughly tested by the Environmental Protection Authority and the Ministry for Primary Industries.
