Mohair prices keep rising

The goat fibre industry is growing: strong international demand and prices continue to leave wool prices far behind.

Mohair exporter Mohair Pacific, based in Canterbury, says the world recession has had no apparent effect on demand, which is continuing to outstrip supply.

Chris Sunstrum says the price has gone from $10.20 to $15.60 over the past 12 months and demand seems to be "insatiable".

He says no flagging was seen at last two sales in South Africa and apparently there is a 50% shortfall in world supply.

Growers in New Zealand are increasing their breeding programme.
