Lincoln aims to improve farms' performance

Lincoln University is looking to improve the performance and use of the farms it owns and operates in the South Island.

Lincoln has 13 farming and horticultural properties, adding up to almost 4000 hectares.

Most are in Canterbury, but the university's property also includes a dryland sheep and beef farm in Marlborough and the Mount Grand high country station in Central Otago.

They are used for research, demonstration and teaching, a couple are leased out and some also provide income for scholarships.

Lincoln has set up a new committee of farmers and staff to oversee the development of the farms.

The chair is a Waikato based agri-businessman, Ross Hyland, who's also been acting as an advisor to the university.

He says Lincoln is not planning to sell any of its farming properties and may add to them in future, but wants to make better use of them.
