New aquaculture strategy launched for Northland

10:46 am on 9 November 2012

The head of Northland Aquaculture Development Group says a new strategy for the region, being launched on Friday, is not before time.

The strategy aims to see aquaculture in Northland developed into a $300 million industry employing more than 700 extra people by 2030.

Development Group chairman Allan Pivac says the strategy has been 10 years in the making and there is still work to be done to implement it.

He says with the fin fish farming, for example, the intention is to apply to the Government's primary growth partnership scheme to look at what's possible.

Mr Pivac says oyster and mussel farmers are doing ongoing research looking at the husbandry techniques.

The strategy will be launched on Friday morning by the Minister for Primary Industries in Ruakaka.
