Vine canker worry for Whangarei

6:30 am on 7 November 2012

KVH says a provisional test for the disease from a gold kiwifruit vine in an orchard near Maungatapere, came back positive.

The result is still being verified but if it is positive, it will be the first time the disease has been found in the Whangarei area.

Dr O'Neill says an orchard in the area was tested for the disease last year.

A provisional control area has been set up around the affected orchard which includes 32 kiwifruit blocks near Maungatapere.

A meeting will be held for Whangarei growers on Friday.

The suspected PSA case there follows confirmation two weeks ago that the disease has reached the Kerikeri kiwifruit growing area.
