Submissions sought on use of herbicides over water

6:32 am on 1 August 2012

The Environmental Protection Authority is seeking public submissions on an application by the Agricultural Re-assessment Group, to allow herbicides to be used over water, to control aquatic pest plants.

The group acts on behalf of 12 regional councils, the Department of Conservation, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Land Information New Zealand and Mighty River Power.

It wants permission to use herbicides containing one of four active ingredients which are currently approved for use on land in New Zealand, in order to target a range of aquatic plants.

The group says using the chemicals will help fulfil its obligations under the Biosecurity Act to control and eradicate where possible, invasive plant species.

Public submissions to the Environmental Protection Authority close on 11 September.
