Auckland Council is making a late bid to expand its Rugby World Cup waterfront fanzones and introduce a new one in Aotea Square.

With an eye on Sunday night's final between the All Blacks and France, the council wants to expand the capacity of Captain Cook Wharf from 10,000 people to 14,000.

It also plans to create a fanzone for 4500 people on neighbouring Marsden Wharf, and a fan area with three big screens in Aotea Square and upper Queen Street.

The Rugby World Cup Authority is hearing the application on Thursday.
