Cup opening night rail problems must be fixed - PM

12:07 pm on 11 September 2011

Prime Minister John Key says the failures in Auckland's rail system on the opening night of the Rugby World Cup, must be rectified.

Delays of up to two hours occurred on Friday evening. Veolia Transport says double the number of passengers that it expected were trying to use the services.

There were also crowd control problems, with an estimated 200,000 at the Auckland waterfront.

Mr Key says it is very disappointing that there were one or two issues, and he understands a lot of work has been going on to ensure it does not happen again.

He says there may be a briefing to Cabinet on the Rugby World Cup, but responsibility for Friday night's problems falls back on Auckland Transport and the Waterfront Authority.
