Salvors sacked after taking wine from Rena wreck

Two contractors on the Rena salvage team have been fired for taking wine bottles from the wreck.

The container ship grounded on Astrolabe Reef, off Tauranga, on 5 October last year.

Svitzer Salvage says two divers took some wine bottles from containers while inspecting the Rena's stern section last week.

Spokesperson Matthew Watson says it appears they may have drunk some of the wine.

Mr Watson says their actions came to the attention of management within a matter of days and both were sent packing.

He says it is not known how many bottles were taken but the wine will be replaced.
