Labour not discounting asset testing extension

9:14 am on 30 September 2011

The Labour Party is refusing to rule out an extension of asset testing to decide who qualifies for subsidised rest home care.

The party on Thursday released its aged care policy, and wants to improve the quality of care through pay parity with the public sector, taxpayer funded training, minimum staffing levels and an increase in home care.

Labour began phasing out asset testing in 1999 by gradually raising the assets threshold while it was in Government.

Increases have continued under the current Government, but now Labour could be looking to reverse that to help fund improvements by lowering the threshold above which the elderly would need to pay for their own care.

Labour's aged care spokesperson, Steve Chadwick, says the party is looking at all possibilities.

She says the cost of the policy, and how it would be met, will be revealed next month.
