Green MP accuses Govt of delaying tactics on alcohol bill

9:25 am on 15 June 2011

Green MP Sue Kedgley is accusing the Government of delaying tactics to avoid having new alcohol legislation before Parliament before the general election.

The Justice and Electoral Select Committee has been given a two-month extension for reporting back on the Alcohol Reform Bill.

Ms Kedgley says it's a ploy to delay the bill until after the election.

She says National wants to avoid a public backlash from people who want tougher measures than those in the bill.

Ms Kedgley says the Government is also under intense lobbying from the alcohol industry.

But committee chair Chester Borrows says the extra time is needed to get the legislation right.
