Labour says division between the Maori and Mana Parties is helping its cause in Te Tai Tokerau.
A new poll shows Labour candidate, Kelvin Davis and Mana Party leader Hone Harawira are neck and neck.
The poll for Maori Television found 41% support for Mr Harawira and 40% for Mr Davis. Maori Party candidate Solomon Tipene was third at 15%.
Deputy Labour leader Annette King. says while Mr Harawira is obviously supported on some issues, Mr Davis is well known and liked in the electorate.
Mr Tipene says Maori Party polling shows he is catching up with Mr Harawira. But he concedes his low profile is an issue.
The by-election is to be held on Saturday, 25 June.
