Ditching Families Commission would be big mistake - Dunne

United Future leader Peter Dunne, the man responsible for the Families Commission, says winding it up would be a big mistake.

Labour wants to abolish the Commission and use the funding to create a Ministry for Children instead.

The commission was set up as a condition of Mr Dunne's support agreement with Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark after the 2002 election.

Labour says it is astounding that New Zealand has a Minister of Racing and the Rugby World Cup, but not one for children.

But Mr Dunne does not agree with that view. He says it is a mistake to separate the interests of children from families as a whole, as families are a fundamental social unit.

He says the commission has played a valuable role in things like the campaign against family violence.
