Signs of partial reconciliation between Maori MPs

9:51 pm on 1 February 2011

There are signs of a partial reconciliation between Maori Party MPs Hone Harawira and Te Ururoa Flavell following a hui near Rotorua on Tuesday.

However, Mr Harawira still faces a disciplinary hearing next week over his public criticism of the party's relationship with the National Government.

Mr Flavell, the Maori Party whip, laid a complaint following comments Mr Harawira made in a newspaper article in which he said voters were abandoning the party because it was coming off the rails and getting too close to National.

The MPs emerged from the hui at Taheke Mara after five hours on Tuesday evening and told reporters they are pleased to have had an opportunity to talk, but there are still issues to be faced.

They refused to reveal details of what was discussed.

Mr Harawira, the MP for Te Tai Tokerau, says that, though he is glad he attended, he does not agree that the issue should go before the party's disciplinary committee on Wednesday next week.

Maori Party president Pem Bird says there will be no official comment until the issue is dealt with at the national council and speculation will only damage the process.

Mr Flavell says the issue is in the hands of the national council and it was not for him to say if Mr Harawira should stay with the party.

The MP for Waiariki says he is disappointed that the process has taken so long, but hopes for a positive outcome.
