Hawkins deciding when to stand down

6:48 am on 10 October 2010

Manurewa Labour MP George Hawkins is taking time to decide when he will resign from Parliament, after winning a seat on the area's new community board.

Mr Hawkins says he will talk to the Labour Party about when he steps down, taking into account things like whether he stays until the next general election or triggers a by-election.

He says one of the difficulties is trying to figure out how much work the new community boards will involve.

Mr Hawkins says he was Mayor of Papakura when he first got into Parliament, and he did both jobs for 18 months.
