The Department of Internal Affairs has confirmed restructuring that will cut 126 permanent and temporary jobs.

It says it will disestablish 165 positions and create 105 new roles for a net loss of 60 established jobs, slightly fewer than it originally planned.

It will also close 66 temporary roles.

The department said combined with cuts last year, the restructuring will save $12 million per year.

"This new structure will help us navigate future fiscal constraints and meet increased expectations around efficiency and performance," Secretary for Internal Affairs Paul James said.

"I know that this change process has been challenging for our people, so I want to acknowledge their continued dedication to their work and the resilience they've shown over the past year."

The new structure will be in place by 1 December.

James said once this process is finished, he is not expecting further organisational change of this scale.
