The Air Force chief says replacements for their ageing Boeing 757s are absolutely necessary.

On Thursday, the government unveiled a $2.7 billion plan to purchase five MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to replace the existing maritime fleet, and two Airbus A321XLR aircraft to replace the 757s.

The helicopters make up the bulk of the total $2.7 billion expense, costing more than $2b, while the planes account for a $620 million capital cost and four-year operating cost of $80.86m under a six-year lease-to-buy agreement.

The 757s have made headlines in recent years after they have broken down on high profile trade trips.

The Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Darryn Webb told Morning Report despite the recent addition of new Hercules planes the pair of Airbus aircraft were necessary.

"The A321 will be able to travel at great range, at great speed and carry great payload all around the world."

Webb said the 757s were over 33-years-old.

"Most homes don't even have a car that is in that age category now, so we have worked those two jets really effectively over a long period of time."

With regard to the Seahawks, Webb said that the helicopters would provide the exact tools needed for New Zealand and interoperable with the country's key partners.

He said that the aircraft would be reliable and include modern technology.

"We are extremely confident these helicopters are exactly what we need."
