Second-term Wellington City councillor Laurie Foon has been named the city's new deputy mayor.

Whanau said she hand-picked the Green party councillor.

"I have 100 percent trust in Laurie. We have a shared vision and she has the respect of councillors based on her kindness and honesty.

"Laurie also has strong connections with the business community which will prove invaluable as we bring them along on the journey of change which faces the city.

"I must also say it is also important to me that I support women in leadership."

Foon said she felt "incredibly honoured to bring her positive mahi to the city" as deputy.

Foon said the promotion was unexpected and she took some time to think about the role - but said it feels like an amazing way to serve the city.

"I see a big part of my role as helping create a unified council to make good decisions on behalf of all Wellingtonians."

The incoming deputy said she works best when out in the community and intends to keep that up.

Foon said she looks forward to getting support from previous deputy mayor Sarah Free, who was re-elected to council.

There will be an official inauguration ceremony for Whanau and Foon on 26 October.
