Twelve candidates are seeking to replace former National leader Simon Bridges who, after 14 years, retired from Parliament earlier this month.

They include Labour minister Jan Tinetti, ACT's Cameron Luxton, and prominent anti-mandate campaigner Sue Grey.

Banker Sam Uffindel was chosen as National's candidate to contest the seat, which National has held since 2005.

That election saw National's Bob Clarkson defeat New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, who had previously held the seat from 1984 to 2005.

On Tuesday, Peters confirmed he and his party would not be running.

The election is on Saturday 18 June, but advanced voting will start on Saturday 4 June.

Te Pāti Māori is also not standing a candidate, over safety and racism concerns in the region.
