Funding change will hit low decile schools

The Labour Party says a change in the formula for school funding will be unfair on low decile schools with high Maori rolls.

Operational funding will now be tied to quarterly rather than annual roll counts.

Labour MP Kelvin Davis, a former school principal, says that means such schools won't have the resources to address the disproportionately high Maori drop-out rate.

He told Waatea News that many low income families move during the year because of housing problems, which will now affect school funding.
