Committee chair denies Labour MPs punished

5:01 pm on 2 July 2010

The chair of Parliament's Law and Order Select Committee is denying that Labour MPs have been punished for walking out of a meeting by having their minority reports excluded from a committee report.

Labour's Clayton Cosgrove says the chair, National's Sandra Goudie, has abused parliamentary democracy by excluding Labour's minority reports on the estimates reports for Police and Corrections.

Mr Cosgrove, two other Labour MPs and a Green MP walked out of Wednesday's meeting in protest at Mrs Goudie's style of chairing.

Mr Cosgrove had said Mrs Goudie did not respect the democratic rights of Opposition MPs to ask questions in committee.

But Mrs Goudie says Labour's minority reports were not included because they could not be discussed at the meeting after Mr Cosgrove walked out.
