MPs shown suitcase full of illicit drugs

10:33 pm on 16 June 2010

A select committee hearing at Parliament was livened up on Wednesday morning when MPs were presented with a suitcase full of illicit drugs.

The Police Minister, Judith Collins, appeared before the law and order committee as part of the budget process.

New police vehicles, the number of officers on the street and the amount of criminals' assets seized under new laws were all discussed.

But it was a practical demonstration of the police's fight against organised crime and drugs that attracted the most attention.

The locked suitcase contained drugs including heroin, cocaine, and ecstacy, worth about $120,000. It was opened for the edification of those present by the police chiefs.

The display included $12,000 worth of methamphetamine, which Mrs Collins pointed out was easily concealed in very small bags.
