The union representing early childhood education teachers says changes in the Budget make a mockery of a new Government report on the state of Maori preschool education.
NZEI vice-president Judith Nowotarski says the Nga Haeata Matauranga report for 2008-2009 found good progress towards ensuring every Maori child has the opportunity to participate in high- quality education.
She told Waatea News that will change once early childhood centres lose the funding which allows them to ensure more than 80% of teachers are qualified.
Ms Nowotarski said a new scheme to increase participation of Maori and Pacific Island children in early childhood education is being done at the expense of the majority of Maori children who already attend preschool.
