The Government is to spend another $550,000 on programmes aimed at dealing with serious youth offenders.

The extra funding will come from within Child, Youth and Family's existing budget.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says initial funding of $350,000 has already been committed.

She says successful applicants include programmes providing mentoring and early intervention and marae or camp-based programmes specifically aimed at young Maori, as well as female offenders.
