An expert in Sino-New Zealand relations says New Zealand's inclusion in a climate change meeting in Beijing, is a sign of how highly valued China views its relationship with this country.
Climate Change Negotiations Minister Tim Groser attended the talks with Premier Wen Jiabao and ministers from India, Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil and representatives of small island states and African nations.
Mr Groser was the only government representative from a developed country.
The meeting discussed how to move forward from a climate conference in Copenhagen last year.
Auckland University lecturer Jian Yang says China trusts New Zealand's perspective, which is believed to be unbiased and independent.
Dr Yang says now that the Government has gained China's confidence, New Zealand must continue to encourage China to address emissions issues.
